OMBAK INDAH Newsletter No 4 ……..Feb 2011.

Hi there,

Almost ready for the new season starting in March. Our first 2 guests this year are both well known to Ombak Indah having visited us several times over the past few years. Ross Shabe and Grant Miller arrive on the 5th & 8th respectivly and hopefully the waves and wind will put on a better effort than has been the case this wet season. We sometimes call it the off season and that’s pretty much a good description of how it’s been ....OFF!

Unlike previous years the onshores started early and never really changed all through the summer though the small crew who were around scored Jenny’s Rights a few times. Just the last few days the wind has dropped a bit and the swell (which we’ve seen little of) has made a bit of an apearance. However, we’re hopeful that the signs and forcasts are correct and we’ll have another good season. Early days yet so no cause to worry.
The surf guides have a new house, the losmen has a new store room and renos to the bar and kitchen and toilets have made a positive improvement to the camp.

Unfortunately we’ve lost the services of Faisal, who many of you know, who left to concentrate on his new warung/restaurant at the end of the road. A cool place for a hang and a feed, maybe internet – if telcomsel can get their s%$@ act together. Don’t forget to call in and say g’day.

ON the subject (nearly) of food I just have to say to crew who have special needs regarding diet etc , be aware of where you’re going. Out here it’s not at all like Bali regarding facilities and supermarkets. Even at Bandar Lampung many western style supplies are not available due to the fact that unlike Bali or Jakarta there are not too many tourists or expats. Even more so in Krui where the markets, shops and supermarkets cater mainly to the locals.

Our staff are local people and none are trained dieticans or nutritionists. There may well be produce in the market to suit vegos, vegans or celiacs but we are not aware of what’s good for you or what’s not. If you find anything suitable in your browsing therough the market bring it to the losmen and tell the kitchen staff how it should be cooked for you. We always have available rice and vegetables and usually chicken, fish or sometimes beef. Special coffees, teas and sauces are hard to come by so if you need anything western bring it yourself or be flexible and try the local tea or coffee.
Remember we’re in a relatively new tourist area and local infrastructure has a lot of catching up to do. Apart fom basic medical services (bring a first aid kit) and how many times all the websites say there is NO money changer or ATM in Krui. Many crew miss that bit while doing their ‘research’ for the trip. For several years we’ve had the promise of one but up till now we still only have the promise. There are 2 24hr money changers not far from the Cipta Hotel in Jakarta so make use of them the night before you leave for the camp.

We’re developing some local tours for flat days, eg, elephant riding, nature treks and visits to Danau Ranau and the hot springs as well as a visit to the coffee Luak facility. Maybe you’ve heard of the coffee, special, expensive and different but certainly interesting.

For crew who don’t come on a package Ani can book you flights to pretty much anywhere you need to go. Just another service provided by Ombak Indah.

Bookings are coming in at a steady pace so don’t hang aroung too long. Not too much other news at the moment so I’ll sign off and go polish the pool balls, or go check Mandiri.

Hope to see a bunch of you here chilling out and catching some choice waves....cheers from Nev, Ani and all the crew here at Ombak Indah.

Safe surfing,

Nev
